If your system recognises your MP3 player as an USB drive but Rhythmbox does not recognise it then create an empty file called .is_audio_player in the root directory of the device. This will cause Rhythmbox to treat the device as an MP3 player.
The .is_audio_player file can also be used to inform Rhythmbox about formats supported by the device and so on, more details at the Rhythmbox FAQs link below.
